style=\"text-align: left;\">Even though\u00a0 he had inherited Asian culture, he remained quite open-minded and his work reflects various inspirations due to artistic encounters that crossed his way in his lifetime shared between Vi\u00eat-Nam and France.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Graduate from the Applied Art School of Gia-\u0110inh (Tr\u01b0\u01a1ng V\u1ebd Gia-\u0110inh) in 1935, he completed h\u00eds artistic studies at the Fine-Arts and Decorative Arts Schools of Paris (1943-1949). <strong>Nguy\u1ec5n Sao<\/strong> was one of the last <strong>Vietnamese artists<\/strong> trained during the colonial period, and when he returned to his homeland, one of the first who taught in the art schools of Vi\u00eat-Nam in Hano\u00ef then in Saigon (1952-1964), bringing his experience of Western art <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/index.php\/en\/teacher\/\">(See Teaching career)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"tran3\"><strong> We would say that he had more than one string to his bow<\/strong> <strong>as he was alternately at ease with :<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"tran3\"><strong>Oil, watercolour, pastel drawing and silk painting<\/strong> :<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span id=\"tran3\">Named by the critics \u00ab\u00a0<em>Po\u00e8te du terroir<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb for his landscapes and his countryside and urban life scenes, the portrait was also a favourite theme, as shown in some of his paintings <a all about traditional Vietnamese lacquer (<strong>s\u01a1n ta<\/strong>) and the delicate techniques of sea and egg shells engraving, silver and gold sheets laying, but he was also an innovative lacquer painter, as he kept researching and using new colours with this medium, creating thus a real painting (<strong>s\u01a1n mai<\/strong> &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/index.php\/en\/engravings\/\">(see Engravings).<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Sculpture<\/h2>\n<p>The busts, low-reliefs, religious statuary achieved at the height of his career
