{"id":618,"date":"2016-02-04T09:17:47","date_gmt":"2016-02-04T08:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/?page_id=618"},"modified":"2025-03-28T13:15:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T12:15:41","slug":"his-life","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/index.php\/en\/his-life\/","title":{"rendered":"His life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fatherless, he was yet endowed with an innate gift for drawing, and when he was of age, he started art studies at the School of Applied Art in <a href=\"http:\/\/truongvegiadinh.blogspot.fr\/2012\/04\/hoa-si-nguyen-sao_07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gia-Dinh<\/a> where he followed the drawing classes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jules-Gustave_Besson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jules G. Besson<\/a><\/strong> (1868 &#8211; 1942), a French naturalist artist.<\/p>\n<p>He graduated from this school in 1935 and began a professional career in scene painting for an itinerant playhouse in South Vi\u00eat-Nam, then in teaching at Phu-Xu\u00e2n Secondary School of Hu\u00ea (1938-1939).<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the Second World War (December 1939), he was mobilized and left for France in the \u00ab\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travailleurs-indochinois.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travailleurs Indochinois<\/a><\/em>\u00a0\u00bb corps ; he was sent as an interpreter at the National Gun-powder Factory of Angoul\u00eame. In this town, he happened to meet <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inventaire.poitou-charentes.fr\/operations\/femmes-celebres-de-poitou-charentes\/303-decouvertes\/513-marie-baranger-une-peintre-fresquiste-voyageuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marie Baranger<\/a><\/strong>, a fresco painter in Sacred Art, a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Denis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maurice Denis<\/a>&lsquo;<\/strong>s student, who encouraged him to pursue artistic studies.<\/p>\n<p>After the Armistice, he reached the French free zone and the Sorgues camp where he ran the Artcrafts House of the \u00ab\u00a0<em>Travailleurs Indochinois<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb Third Legion. During this stay in Vaucluse, he also enrolled at the Municipal Fine-Arts School of Avignon, which was directed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Claude_Firmin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claude Firmin<\/a><\/strong>, a Provence Master painter who became a friend.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1182\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1182\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1182 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sorgues-1941-222x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sorgues-1941-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sorgues-1941-768x1038.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sorgues-1941-758x1024.jpg 758w, http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/sorgues-1941.jpg 1350w\" alt=\"sorgues-1941\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sorgues 1941<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1943, he was transferred to Paris, and this enabled him to attend the courses of the National Superior Fine-Arts School (ENSBA) in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicolas_Untersteller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicolas Untersteller<\/a><\/strong>&lsquo;s workshop, then later on, in 1945, those of the National Superior Decorative-Arts School (ENSAD). He finally achieved his youth dream, and during this Parisian post-war period, he kept close to other artists, some compatriots, but also French and foreign artists. During this period, he also met a Parisian young lady native from Auvergne, with whom he got married in 1946.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-241\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1945_0000_vers_nonDate_BdMontparnasse_bas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-241\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1945_0000_vers_nonDate_BdMontparnasse_bas-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"Paris Montparnasse, 1945\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1945_0000_vers_nonDate_BdMontparnasse_bas-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1945_0000_vers_nonDate_BdMontparnasse_bas.jpg 475w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paris Montparnasse, 1946<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fully enriched by this experience as an artist, he went back to his homeland, thirteen years after his departure, and was appointed at the Fine-Arts School of Hano\u00ef (1952-1954).<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 1954, he arrived in Sa\u00efgon and till 1972, he spent his time creating and exhibiting his works while teaching at the National Superior Fine-Arts School of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/truongvegiadinh.blogspot.fr\/2012\/04\/hoa-si-nguyen-sao_07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gia-Dinh<\/a> (1954-1964), then at Marie-Curie and Regina Mundi High Schools (1964-1972). They were the Saigonese years, the most creative ones, during which his artwork attained its utmost plenitude.<\/p>\n<p>It was during that very period, that he approached the lacquer object as a painting while using natural materials (egg shells, nacre) and respecting the various stages of the traditional technique (<span style=\"color: #800000;\">see heading on <em>Lacquers<\/em>)<\/span> and that he began unveiling his talents as a sculptor. He actually received orders of sculptures, namely the statues of Joan-of-Acre and Saint-Teresa of the Infant-Jesus for the Chapel of Grall Hospital in Sa\u00efgon, and on the same premises, the bronze relief stele erected in honor of the doctors, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Calmette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calmette<\/a><\/strong> and <strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexandre_Yersin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yersin<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>1972 was the year of his return in France, where he rejoined his children, and until the last years of his life, he unwearidly went on painting and exhibiting in France and abroad (Italy &#8211; Spain &#8211; Belgium &#8211; Japan). During these first years in Paris, he renewed with the art of engraving, his former training, and he collaborated with a workshop making lacquer furniture as a designer-decorator.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-356\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1977_1230_versLe_atelier24_bas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-356\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1977_1230_versLe_atelier24_bas-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"Dans son atelier, Paris (1977)\" width=\"255\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1977_1230_versLe_atelier24_bas-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1977_1230_versLe_atelier24_bas-1024x725.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/1977_1230_versLe_atelier24_bas.jpg 1047w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 255px) 100vw, 255px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In his studio, Paris 1977<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the twilignt of his life, he mainly made pastel drawings, crayons that he used to carry with him when he travelled in France, and above all in Auvergne, his wife&rsquo;s region. There was an ultimate journey in Vi\u00eat-Nam in Summer 1999 ; he saw then, part of his family, his native village and the family temple in V\u1ef9-D\u1ea1, where some of his paintings are displayed, among them an oil portrait of Prince poet Tuy-L\u00fd.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-268\" style=\"width: 193px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/tuy-ly-vuong.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-268\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nguyensao.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/tuy-ly-vuong.jpg\" alt=\"Le prince po\u00e8te Tuy Ly, huile sur toile (Hu\u00e9 1997)\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prince poet Tuy L\u00fd, oil on canvas (Hu\u00ea 1997)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By the late 1990s, he started losing eyesight and gradually stopped creating.
